  1. 1. Some interesting language the author uses to describe Flint is “if you spit, the slob would be an ice cube before it hit the ground”. Another way he describes how cold it is “When you breathed out your breath kind of hung in the air like a hunk of smoke and you could walk along and look exactly like a train blowing big, fat, white puffs of smoke”.
    2. Hambone tries to prevent Wilona from marrying Mr. Watson by telling her lies about Mr. Watson and Flint Michigan. I think Mr. Watson feels ill about Hambone because he tried to keep Wilona from marrying him by lying about him. I infer this because he was making fun of Hambone Henderson.
    3. Kenny’s relationship with Byron is mixed because since he is the schools “god”, he doesn’t get teased as much because some people think that if they do, then they will get bullied by Byron. Kenny is thankful for this. Kenny’s relationship with Byron is rocky because Byron tricks him and teases him sometimes. An example of Byron bullying Kenny is when he and his friend trick Kenny in “How to Survive a Blizzard Part One” when he has to cover his face in high winds and they throw snow at him as the snow.
    4. One new word I learned is bruh which is an African American slang term for bro and is used in this sentence: “Cool, baby bruh,” By said. Another new word is snowbank, which is a big wall of snow, like what the plow makes. The sentence I found this in is: After I climbed out of the snowbank, they started laughing and so did I. One last word I learned is hacking (as in hacking away at a scab of ice) which means chipping away at something. The sentence I found this in is: I went over to the Brown Bombers passenger side and started hacking away at the scab of ice that was all over the windows. NLD5

  2. 1. The first interesting word he used to describe the cold was, “it felt like Jack Frost had moved in with us”. The second interesting word he uses to describe the cold was, “ it was colder than the inside of an icebox”.
    2. Hambone tries to discourage Wilona from marrying Mr. Watson was by making a bunch of lies about Mr. Watson and the town Flint. Mr. Watson thinks of Hambone as annoying because he made up a bunch of lying insults about Mr. Watson behind his back.
    3. The relationship that Kenny has with Byron is bad because Byron is constantly teasing and hurting him for fun.

The author uses comparisons when he is describing how cold it is in Flint. For example, “it was so cold that if you spit, the slob would be an ice cube before it hit the ground.” Page 1. Another example is, “It was so cold that if you were stupid enough to go outside your eyes would automatically blink a thousand times all by themselves, probably so the juice inside of them wouldn’t freeze up.” Page 1.

2.)Hambone Henderson tried to discourage Wilona from marrying Mr. Watson by telling a pack of lies about him and when she didn’t believe him he told her a pack of lies about Flint. I think Mr. Watson believes Hambone is a jealous guy. They both proposed to Wilona around the same time, and she picked Mr. Watson. I can tell Mr. Watson is proud to be Wilona’s husband by the way he makes fun of Hambone. He made up that nickname because he had a head shaped just like a hambone, and it had more knots and bumps than a dinosaur. Also, Mr Watson likes to make fun of the way Hambone talks. He uses a slang voice and says things like, “ Flint, Mitch-again”. Pg. 5

In my opinion, Byron and Kenny do not have a good relationship. I think this because they remind me of the relationship other brothers and sisters have. They just don’t get along and they don’t stop fighting. On page 11it states,” As soon as I looked at him Byron blasted me in the face with a mouthful of snow”

1.)Delinquent: Failing in or neglectful of a duty or obligation; guilty of a misdeed or offense. This word is being used in the book by Byron saying, he is now a teenager juvenile delinquent and doesn’t want to be touch and he won’t touch anybody either.
2.)Staggered: To move or stand unsteadily, as if under a great weight; totter. When Byron was trying to get his lips off the car, he staggered back a little bit.
3.)Thermostat: A thermostat is a component of a control system which senses the temperature of a system so that the system's temperature is maintained near a desired set point. The Watson’s turned up the thermostat to get warm and it always made a banging sound like it was about to blow up

  4. ma1 1: In the book Kenny said it was a zillion degrees below zero. Also the author said that Kenny said that if you spit, the slob would freeze in mid air before it hit the ground.

2: In the book the the dad said that Hambone told the mom a pack of lies about dad and
Flint,Michigan so she wouldn't marry dad. Dad says that he is a clown, starts teasing
about Hambone, and says that he has more lumps on his head then a dinosaur.

3: Kenny's relationship with Byron is not the best. I know this because when they were scraping the ice of the car Byron started to say shut up to Kenny and Byron and his friend Buphead teased Kenny.

4: One word is pouting and it means to show displeasure. In the book it tolled that Byron was pouting that he had to scrape the ice of the car. Another word is delinquent and it means to neglect the law. In the book it's saying that Byron is a juvenile delinquent . The last word is flypaper that is a paper with sticky poison to kill flys. In the book it's saying that Byron's lips were stuck on the mirror like a fly on flypaper.

    1. The author describes how cold it is in Flint because on page # 5 when Hambone told Wilona that if she moves up far north that it’s colder than an icebox. Also, Hambone would say that the houses in Flint are made out of igloos and he said that the movie, Nanook of the North took place in Flint, which is not true.

    2. Hambone Henderson tries to discourage Wilona from marring Mr.Watson when he tells her that Flint is very cold and that its cold like an icebox, but he says that if Wilona marries him that it wont be cold like Flint. Mr.Watson hates Hambone. One reason is that Mr.Watson and the granddad made the name up but it stuck with him. His real name is Moses but the dad hated him so much they named him Hambone. Another reason is that Hambone and Mr.Watson both proposed to Wilona at the same time.

    3. In my opinion Kenny and Byron’s relationship isn’t good. I think this because when Kenny was playing in the snow and Byron gave him the “ hurricane test.” The hurricane test is when you try to stand still when someone torchers you. Also, when Byron got his lips stuck to the glass Kenny didn’t trust him, this shows that their relationship isn’t that good.

    4. The three vocabulary words I found are Poindexter, Hambone, and I couldn’t find another one. I looked up what Poindexter and it meant that it’s an American term for egghead or nerd. This makes since because everyone calls Kenny an egghead. I looked up what Hambone and it means that you’re the type of person that loves to hate. This make since because Hambone Henderson is a very mean person.

    1. One interesting thing the author said to describe Flint is how he said it was about a zillion degrees outside; another thing I thought was interesting was how he compared Flint to an ice box.
    2. One way Hambone tries to discourage Wilona is by saying that in Flint it is colder than the inside of an ice box; he also told her that people there lived inside of igloos.
    3. Byron is mean to Kenny but since Byron is like in charge of the school in a way (Kenny even said that Byron is the “god” of the school) Kenny is not bullied as much in school since everybody is so afraid of Byron.
    4. One new vocabulary word is delinquent this word means someone who gets in trouble a lot, in the book Kenny calls Byron a delinquent because he is a bad kid. The second new vocabulary word is juvenile this word means a kid or child, Kenny calls his brother a juvenile delinquent because he is a bad kid. The last vocabulary word is Plymouth this word is a type of car that companies made in the 1900s, in the book Kenny is talking about their Plymouth car the “Brown Bomer”.
